Burton and Gina’s Story

Burton is 94. His wife, Gina, is 86. They’d moved back to California to be closer to their daughter, living in her family’s basement apartment. It kept them near the people they love, but the stairs were steep, and at 94 and 86, climbing them was becoming impossible. They needed more than a basement could offer: help with meals and laundry, someone nearby at shower time, and rides to the doctors they no longer drive themselves to.

The right place was out there, an assisted living community with all the support they needed. Burton is a veteran, and his VA Aid and Attendance benefit would help cover it. But those benefits take time to come through, and a move-in cost won’t wait. They needed to get in the door now, while the paperwork caught up.

That’s the gap SHORE stepped into. A grant helped them make the move, so they didn’t have to keep climbing those stairs or keep waiting to be in a supportive environment.

We asked Burton and Gina what they’d say to the board members and donors who made their grant possible.
